這條消息暗合了之前微軟努力讓更多手機廠商採用Windows Phone系統的報導。9月收購 Nokia 後，微軟在第一時間表示，收購案不影響 Windows Phone 系統的分發政策，未來他們仍會向其它手機商提供系統授權。Windows 和 Windows Phone 部門主管特里·邁爾森（Terry Myerson）更是在部落格裡猛誇下游廠商，表示微軟能做到既和合作夥伴競爭，同時又為他們提供服務。
而在10月，彭博社稱微軟第二次向 HTC 提出加強 Windows Phone 產品投入的意圖。微軟甚至願意砍掉系統授權費，同意 HTC 在現有 Android 手機上直接安裝 Windows Phone 系統，以便讓後者能夠盡快地推出新機。
擁有更豐富的下游廠商一直是微軟追求的目標。Sony 在影視、遊戲和音樂上擁有其它 Windows Phone 硬體廠商無法比擬的優勢。Sony 入駐後，毫無疑問將繁榮 Windows Phone 系統生態；而 Sony 在拍照成像上的多年積累，也可以讓 Windows Phone 用戶擁有 Nokia Lumia 之外的第二個選項。
事實上，sㄗㄟ在兩年前就曾考慮過加入 Windows Phone 陣營。硬件測評網站 PhoneDog 曾曝光過 SOny Windows Phone原型機的諜照——一款具有側滑全鍵盤、運行 Windows Phone 7 的設備。遺憾的是，產品最終沒有投產上市。
此次的傳言似乎是過去計劃的重啟。只是對 Sony 而言，進入 Windows Phone 陣營顯然做出比微軟削減系統授權費更大的決心。Windows Phone 陣營中的 Nokia 就像 Android 中的三星一樣難以撼動。AdDuplex發布的最新統計數據顯示，Nokia 已經拿下92.1%的 Windows Phone 市場，HTC、三星和華為的份額總和還不到一成。
這樣的結果很難讓廠商們鼓起勇氣宣傳 Windows Phone 手機——即便他們在產品研發上同樣傾注心力。而在這種形勢下，同樣很能保證 Sony 進入 Windows Phone 陣營後，不會淪為與三星、華為一樣的下場。Sony 要做的當真是個「艱難的決定」。
