初學英文的人猛背單字，以為越多越好。講了幾年英文才發現，字不一定要用得那樣深，最自然的英文表達，是開發字的「第二個意思」。例如，culture不一定指文化，boot不一定指靴子，carry the ball不是帶著球。英文的「一個單字」就可以對應出「好幾種情況」，這是因為英文字在進化過程中，單字會從原有的概念，衍生出其他相關含義。
1、I have no culture. （X）我沒有文化。
有人到美國，生病了去醫院，向醫生要個處方，醫生不給，說：“I have no culture。” 他以為看病和「文化」有什麼關係？！其實，醫生是說他沒有病菌培養檢驗結果，不能先給處方。
culture除了當文化，它還有培養的意思，像珍珠的養殖，例如：The culture of pearls is the mainstay of this county.（珍珠養殖是該縣的主要經濟支柱。）細菌的培養也可以用culture。
【point】想一想文化的養成和病菌的培養有什麼共通之處，為什麼它們都是culture？
2、Get the boot （X）給你一腳！
上班遲到，老闆不高興地說：“ If you're late again, you're getting the boot.”。你還以為是「如果你再遲到，就給你一腳」或「如果你再遲到，你會得到靴子」
原來：get the boot 是委婉的表達解雇某人的意思，同樣的這個意思，還有一種書面表達方法是 give somebody the boot.
聽說公司要改組，辦公室裡風聲鶴唳，人人自危；但還有一群工作懶散的同事每天遲到早退，渾然不覺，It's really surprising that they still be in dark about such important things.（真奇怪，他們至今對那樣重要的事還一無所知。）In the dark，其實就是搞不清楚狀況。
【point】我不懂叫「I don’t know.」該知道卻還不知道，就叫做「in the dark」。
4、Carry The Ball （X）帶球跑。
如果有人告訴你，某某人剛換了工作，“He carries the ball”。請不要以為他真閒，上班時間還可以練高爾夫球。carry the ball有擔當要職的意思！
