章魚媽護卵 不離、不吃、不喝4年半

一群美國學者多年前開始觀察一隻北方太平洋谷蛸（章魚），牠在孵化160顆卵後寸步不離，就這樣不吃不喝的度過了四年半。

這群科學家2007年5月用遙控潛艇在加州中部海域下1400公尺處，發現一隻章魚媽媽緊附在岩石表面，不眠不休的保護卵不受污染，且四年半沒進食，其間還擊退獵食者。

到了2011年9月，章魚卵從初期的藍莓大小成長至葡萄大小，其間章魚媽媽因沒有離開覓食，體型因而變小，表皮也變得蒼白及鬆弛。研究員在科學期刊《PLOS ONE》發表研究結果，指這是目前已知物種中最長的孵化期。
